Reform beats Labour by six votes to take Runcorn and Helsby
6+ mon, 4+ week ago (799+ words) Nigel Farage's Reform UK has secured victory by six votes over Labour in Runcorn and Helsby as Sir Keir Starmer failed his first by-election test as Prime Minister. The narrow victory'for new MP Sarah Pochin saw Reform taking a constituency which Labour won with a majority of almost 14,700 less than 12 months ago. The result came as Reform made gains against both Labour and the Conservatives across England in local contests, with Mr Farage claiming a "big moment" was taking place in politics. The by-election was triggered when former Labour MP Mike Amesbury quit after admitting punching a constituent. Amesbury won 53% of the vote at the general election " and the defeat, along with Reform gains in other Labour heartlands, will cause unease in Downing Street. Mr Farage said: "For the movement, for the party, it's a very, very big moment indeed,…...

Clyde Tunnel ‘could close’ as workers vote to strike for better pay
6+ mon, 1+ week ago (501+ words) One of Scotland's "most important roads could close with untold disruption" as workers backed strikes in response to a pay dispute. The Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow, relied upon by around 65,000 drivers a day, faces disruption as control room staff have unanimously backed industrial action. A team of 10 staff based in the city's Whiteinch are responsible for monitoring the tunnel's CCTV system, ensuring it is safe for drivers who use it to cross beneath the River Clyde. They also control ventilation and respond to breakdowns among other emergencies. GMB Scotland said their members in the team backed strike action after Cosla offered a 3% pay increase, which workers deemed too low. The union warned that if the workers strike, the tunnel, which connects the north and south of Glasgow, may be forced to close. Keir Greenaway, senior organiser in public services for…...
All the team news for Blues' clash with Barnet
10+ mon, 1+ week ago (208+ words) SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher is facing selection dilemmas ahead of Saturday's clash with Barnet. "We'll have to decide what's best on that front and decide what's the best way to go." Harness started Wednesday's night's clash at Boston United but the match had to be abandoned after just seven minutes due to fog. Macauley Bonne and Charley Kendall started in attack but Josh Walker is now edging closer to full fitness " giving Maher another decision to make. But, as things stands, both sides have seen their allocation limited to 17,500 tickets due to planned engineering works on the trainline. However, the decision has quite rightly angered supporters of both sides and the Echo's chief sports reporter Chris Phillips has now set up a petition to show the strength of feeling among the supporters. He said: "Southend United and Oldham Athletic both have incredible supporters and as many of them as possible deserve to go to Wembley to watch their side.
